Paper backing targets are required in National Rifle Association (NRA) sanctioned rifle tournaments, their purpose being to eliminate the possibility of a crossfire being scored. Backers are placed in frames behind the recording target at varying distances depending on the range being fired and the distance between firing points. They are made of heavy paper.
